Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has urged
the government to set up an expert committee to recommend the academic
areas that should become the focus of the proposed Malayalam University.
In
a letter to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Friday, he said the
government appeared to be in a hurry to inaugurate the university on
November 1 on the basis of a report prepared by Chief Secretary K.
Jayakumar.
In his report, Mr. Jayakumar had proposed
courses such as M.A. (Poetry), M.A. (Drama), M.A. (Novel), and also two
campuses spread over an area of 100 acres for the university, Mr.
Achuthanandan said.
But Mr. Achuthanandan said there
should be more discussion for deciding where the campus should be
located and how much land should be made available for it.
He also felt the Chief Secretary’s recommendations were not in line with the basic concept of such a university.
The
university should be one that should deal with specialised research in
Malayalam language and literature and also in Kerala culture. The
universities devoted to Tamil, Kannada and Telugu could provide a model
for Malayalam University, Mr. Achuthanandan said.
He
wanted the government to include teachers and academicians of high
stature in the expert committee for preparing a detailed report on the
character of the university. The report should then be subjected to a
discussion before accepting the final scheme of the university.
He
also urged the government to introduce a Bill in the Assembly for
making Malayalam the compulsory first language in all schools in the
State.
The government had issued an order stipulating
the teaching of Malayalam as the first language in the schools, but a
Division Bench of the High Court of Kerala had ruled that the government
could not issue such a stipulation in the case of the CBSE schools in
the State.
More and more CBSE schools were being
sanctioned in the State. If Malayalam was not taught in these schools,
the younger generation would soon be totally alienated from the
language, he said.
